If you build something real with an AI app builder, sooner or later you need the code: to hand a project to a client, to bring in a developer, or to leave a platform that got too expensive. Most AI app builders let you get it out. They differ in how (download or GitHub sync), on which plan, and in what stays behind.
Youmake is built around this: you can export your project code or sync it to GitHub, and import an existing repository. Below is how eight AI website and app builders handle code export, checked against each vendor's own documentation on October 26, 2026.
Disclosure: this guide is published by Youmake. Every entry, including ours, is based on the vendor's own docs and pricing pages.
Quick answer: which AI builders let you export your code?
| Tool | How you get the code | Plan needed | What doesn't come with it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Youmake | Export the project, or sync to GitHub | Paid plans (no free plan) | Connected services (e.g. Supabase) stay in your own accounts |
| Lovable | Git sync (GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket); code download | Git sync on every plan; download from Pro | Lovable Cloud backend |
| Bolt.new | Download as a zip; GitHub connection | Not stated in Bolt's docs | GitHub settings don't carry over when a project is duplicated |
| v0 | GitHub sync | Every plan, including Free | Download isn't listed on the pricing page |
| Replit | Download as a zip; GitHub | Workspace admins can block exports | Secrets, databases and deployment settings |
| Base44 | Two-way GitHub sync | Builder plan and up | Not available on Free or Starter |
| FlutterFlow | Download Flutter source or APK | Basic ($39/mo) and up | Not on the Free plan |
| Bubble | No code export; data export only | n/a | The app logic: it only runs on Bubble |
What "owning the code" actually means
Getting the files is only half of it. A working app also depends on things that live outside the code:
- The database and user accounts. If they sit inside the builder's own backend, exporting the code doesn't move your data or logins with it.
- Secrets and API keys. These are almost never exported, by design; you set them up again wherever you host.
- Hosting and the domain. Exported code needs somewhere to run. Check that your domain is in your own registrar account, not the builder's.
The safest setup keeps each piece in an account you control: code in your GitHub, data in your own database project, the domain at your registrar. That's the setup we recommend in Youmake, and it's the one to ask any builder about before you commit.
Youmake: code export and GitHub sync
Youmake builds websites, web apps, mobile apps and slide decks from a description. Code ownership is part of the workflow rather than an upgrade:
- Export your project code at any time, or sync it to GitHub so every change lands in your own repository.
- Import an existing GitHub repository and keep building on it.
- Connect your own services: Supabase for the database and logins, Stripe for payments, Vercel for hosting. They stay in your accounts, so nothing is stranded if you leave.
- Publish to your own custom domain.
The limits: there's no free plan (you can try it for 3 days for $1, card required), and Starter costs $20/month. Details are on the code ownership page.

Lovable
Lovable includes Git sync with GitHub, GitLab and Bitbucket on every plan, including Free. Downloading the code directly needs the Pro plan or higher. If your app uses Lovable Cloud for its backend, plan how you'll move the data before you leave. More in our Lovable alternatives guide.
Bolt.new
Bolt's help center describes downloading a project as a zip you can run locally with npm install and npm run dev, and a GitHub connection that syncs changes. Its docs don't say which plans include each option. Note that duplicating a project keeps the code but drops the GitHub settings.
v0
v0 lists "Sync with GitHub" on its Free plan, and paid plans include everything from Free. A direct download isn't listed on the pricing page, so GitHub is the route out. If you want a finished site on your own domain rather than a Next.js repo, see our v0 alternative.
Replit
Replit lets you download a project as a zip from the file tree menu. On team workspaces, an admin can turn on a setting that bans source code export. Secrets, databases and deployment settings don't come with the zip. See our Replit alternatives if you're moving off it.
Base44
Base44's FAQ says two-way GitHub sync exports the full source code to your own repository. On the pricing page, GitHub integration is listed on the Builder, Pro and Elite plans, not on Free or Starter.
FlutterFlow
FlutterFlow's Basic plan ($39/month) adds code download: you can download the Flutter project source or an APK. The Free plan doesn't include it.
Bubble
Bubble apps run only on Bubble. Its manual says there's no way to export an application as code; you can export your data (for example as CSV or JSON) and get help exporting the design. Choose Bubble only if you're happy to stay on it long term.
Checklist before you choose a builder
- Can I get the code on the plan I'll actually pay for? Not just on the top tier.
- Does the code sync to my own GitHub, or do I have to download it by hand?
- Where do the database and logins live? In an account I own, or inside the builder?
- Is the domain in my own registrar account?
- Can a developer run the exported project locally without the builder?

How to keep your code with Youmake
- Start a project at youmake.dev and describe what you want to build.
- Connect your GitHub account, so every change syncs to a repository you own.
- Connect your own Supabase project if the app needs a database or logins.
- Publish to your own domain.
- When you hand the project over, transfer the repository and the Supabase project to your client. Agencies use this flow for client portals.
FAQ
Which AI website builder gives me access to the code? Youmake, Lovable, Bolt.new, v0, Replit, Base44 and FlutterFlow all let you get the code out, by download, GitHub sync, or both. Bubble does not.
Do I own the code an AI builder writes? Only if you can export it. Check which plan includes export or GitHub sync, and keep the repository in your own GitHub account.
Can I move an AI-built app to my own hosting? Yes, if you have the code and the backend services live in your own accounts. Expect to set up secrets and environment variables again.
Which AI app builder is best for handing projects to clients? We recommend Youmake: you publish on the client's domain, the code syncs to GitHub, and the services stay in accounts you can transfer. More guides live in our vibe coding and AI app building hub.
