This week, Martin Fowler highlighted a paper by researchers Shaw and Nave at the Wharton School that proposes something fascinating: AI isn't just a tool. It's becoming a third cognitive system in our minds. And that has consequences we're only starting to understand.

You're choosing what to delegate and critically evaluating the output.
Cognitive surrender is the danger zone. It's when you passively trust AI output without engaging System 2 at all. You accept the summary without reading the paper. You ship the AI-generated code without understanding what it does. You let the model make the decision, and your role becomes clicking "accept."
The researchers found through experiments that this isn't a theoretical concern — it's measurable. When people have easy access to AI-generated answers, they spend less time engaging their own deliberative thinking, even when the stakes are high enough to warrant it.
The Over-Editing Problem: A Perfect Example

This isn't masochism. It's cognitive maintenance. Just like physical exercise keeps your body functional, deliberate thinking keeps your System 2 sharp.
4. Review as a Skill
If you manage a team, invest in review capabilities. Code review, design review, strategy review — these are now your highest-value activities. Train people to be excellent reviewers, not just excellent producers. In an AI-augmented world, the reviewer is more important than the creator.
5. Document Your Reasoning
When you make a decision, write down why — not just what you decided, but the trade-offs you considered, the alternatives you rejected, and the assumptions you're making. This fights intent debt and forces System 2 engagement even when it's tempting to let AI handle the thinking.
The Mindset Meta-Game
Here's the deeper pattern I see: the people who will thrive in the AI era aren't the ones who use the most AI tools or the least. They're the ones who are most intentional about the boundary between delegation and surrender.
This is fundamentally a mindset challenge. The technology will keep getting better. The temptation to surrender will keep growing. The models will produce output that's increasingly indistinguishable from expert-level work. And your brain — evolved to conserve energy, to default to the easy path — will whisper that it's fine, just accept it, move on.
The builders who resist that whisper — who stay curious about why things work, who maintain their ability to think independently even as they leverage AI extensively — will have a compounding advantage. Because when everyone else has surrendered their judgment to the same models, original thinking becomes the scarcest resource on the planet.
That's not a future prediction. That's already true today.
