There's a particular irony unfolding in the AI industry right now that deserves more attention than it's getting. Companies that position themselves as champions of transparency, safety, and responsible AI development are — to put it bluntly — terrible at being honest. Not just with the public, but with each other.

This week gave us two perfect examples that crystallize the problem.

The Anthropic Leak That Shouldn't Have Happened

On March 26th, Fortune reported that Anthropic — the company literally founded on the premise of building safer, more transparent AI — had an unsecured data trove that exposed details of its next unreleased model, codenamed "Mythos." The leak also included internal information about an invite-only CEO event and other sensitive organizational details.

Let that sink in for a second. The company whose entire brand identity revolves around being the "responsible AI" player couldn't secure its own internal data. This isn't a minor slip. It's a fundamental contradiction between what Anthropic says it values and how it actually operates.

And here's what makes it worse: this happened in the same week that a judge noted that "punishing Anthropic is classic illegal First Amendment retaliation," pointing to a pattern of the company being more concerned with controlling narratives than actually being open.

Google's Quiet Revolution Nobody's Talking About

Meanwhile, Google dropped something genuinely important that barely made headlines. Their new TurboQuant compression algorithm can reduce AI memory usage by at least six times with zero accuracy loss. Read that again — six times less memory, no quality trade-off.

This is the kind of breakthrough that could democratize AI inference, making it possible to run powerful models on devices that currently can't handle them. But Google buried it in a research blog post. No fanfare. No keynote. No press event.

Why? Because Google is simultaneously trying to sell expensive cloud compute services. Telling the world that models can run on a fraction of the hardware doesn't exactly help the margins on Google Cloud Platform.

This is the transparency crisis in miniature: companies will share research when it burnishes their reputation, but downplay it when it conflicts with their business model.

The Apple-Google Distillation Deal

Perhaps the most telling development is the revelation that Apple has "complete access" to Google's Gemini model in its data centers, with the ability to use it to train smaller "student" models through distillation. This deal, originally announced in January, essentially means Apple is using Google's massive AI to create lighter versions for its own devices.

On one hand, this is smart engineering. Knowledge distillation is a proven technique, and it makes sense to leverage the best available models to create efficient ones. On the other hand, consider what this means for consumers: when Apple eventually markets its AI features as "designed by Apple," the reality is far more complicated. The intelligence was originally Google's, refined by Apple, deployed on your iPhone.

Neither company has any incentive to make this chain of custody clear to users. And so they won't.

Too Much Compute, Too Little Honesty

The backdrop to all of this is an industry facing a reckoning. As The Verge's Hayden Field reported this week, the AI sector is dealing with "too much compute, too much competition, and skeptical investors." The gold rush mentality is colliding with economic reality.

When money gets tight, transparency is usually the first casualty. Companies that might have been forthcoming about their limitations during the boom times are now incentivized to oversell capabilities and undersell risks. Investors don't want to hear about safety concerns — they want to hear about moats and market capture.

This creates a vicious cycle:

  • Companies overpromise to secure funding
  • Researchers can't publish honest assessments without risking their jobs
  • The public gets a distorted picture of what AI can and can't do
  • Policy makers legislate based on hype rather than reality
  • Actual safety work gets deprioritized in favor of shipping features
  • What Real Transparency Would Look Like

    If we're serious about AI transparency, here's what it would actually require:

    Mandatory model cards with teeth. Not the marketing-friendly summaries companies currently publish, but detailed documentation of training data sources, known failure modes, benchmark gaming strategies, and real-world performance gaps. With penalties for misrepresentation.

    Open incident reporting. When an AI system fails or causes harm, that information should be shared industry-wide, similar to how aviation handles safety incidents. The Anthropic leak wasn't reported by Anthropic — it was discovered by journalists. That's backwards.

    Financial transparency around AI costs. Companies should disclose the actual cost of training and running their models, so users and businesses can make informed decisions about adoption. The current opacity around compute costs serves no one except the companies charging for it.

    Honest capability assessments. When a model hallucinates, when it fails at basic reasoning, when it produces harmful output — that information should be as prominent as the marketing about what it can do well.

    The Builder's Perspective

    For those of us actually building with AI — the developers, the startup founders, the product teams — this transparency crisis isn't abstract. It directly affects our ability to make good decisions.

    When you're choosing between AI providers, you're making bets based on incomplete information. Which model is actually better for your use case? What are the real latency numbers, not the cherry-picked benchmarks? What happens when the model encounters edge cases in your domain?

    The answer, too often, is: you won't know until you've already committed time and resources.

    This is why the builder community needs to step up where the big companies won't. Share your benchmarks. Document your failures. Talk openly about what worked and what didn't. The collective intelligence of the developer community can fill the transparency gap that corporations refuse to close.

    The Road Ahead

    I don't think the AI industry's transparency problem will solve itself. The incentive structures are too misaligned. Companies that are honest about limitations lose deals to competitors who aren't. Researchers who raise concerns get sidelined in favor of those who ship features.

    But the alternative — an industry built on hype, opacity, and strategic leaks — is worse for everyone. Including the companies themselves. Because when the gap between marketing and reality gets too wide, the correction isn't gentle. It's a crash.

    The AI companies that will still be standing in five years aren't the ones with the best PR. They're the ones building genuine trust through actual transparency. Not the performative kind. The uncomfortable kind.

    And right now, none of them are doing it well enough.
